As meadows, gravel pits, and open sandy areas become overgrown or developed, vital nesting habitats for many of our wild bees are disappearing. However, restoring these habitats is both possible and effective– by using bare sand as a conservation management tool.
The contorta pine (Pinus contorta), sometimes called the “turbo pine”, was introduced in Sweden on a large scale during the 1970s and 1980s as a response to concerns about a future shortage of biomass. This species grows about 30% faster than the native pine (Pinus sylvestris), which made it attractive for forestry. Today, it is found on about 600,000 hectares, mainly in northern Sweden.
May 22 marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, a global initiative that draws attention to the critical importance of protecting our planet’s rich variety of life. The theme for 2025 is: “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
