Plants and animals require genetic diversity to remain resilient and adapt to rapid changes in climate and the environment. By incorporating genetic considerations into conservation planning, we can better protect biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems.
The concept of biodiversity describes nature’s variation at three levels: ecosystem diversity, species diversity, and genetic variation within species. A high level of genetic variation among individuals enables some to withstand challenges such as drought or to continue reproducing despite a changing climate.
An international study analysing data from over 80,000 scientific articles on genetic changes in nature has highlighted the decline in genetic diversity as a global issue. Halting the loss of genetic diversity presents a significant challenge for biodiversity conservation. Mammals and birds are particularly affected when facing threats such as land-use changes, diseases, extreme weather and deforestation. The study emphasizes that conservation measures play a crucial role in reversing this negative trend and preventing further loss of genetic diversity.
